Margin support

Margin keeps your sermon notes, transcripts and Scripture on your own devices. Here are answers to common questions. If you don't see yours, write to corey@tektonlegacy.com.

Recording

Margin isn't recording. Check that Margin can use the microphone: Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone. Margin's Settings tab shows each permission and links to iOS Settings.

Can I lock my iPhone while recording? Yes. Margin keeps recording, and the Lock Screen shows the sermon with Star and Pause buttons.

There's no transcript. Margin transcribes on your device, so it needs your iPhone or iPad to support on-device speech recognition for the sermon's language. The first time, iOS may download Apple's speech model; that can take a few minutes on Wi-Fi. The recording is always saved.

Stars

How do I star a moment without opening Margin? While a sermon is recording, tap Star on the Lock Screen. You can also add the Star Moment control to Control Center or the Action Button (Settings › Action Button › Controls), say "Star this moment in Margin" to Siri, or tap Star on your Apple Watch.

Study Notes

I don't see Study Notes. Study Notes need an iPhone or iPad that supports Apple Intelligence, with Apple Intelligence turned on in Settings › Apple Intelligence & Siri. If it was just turned on, give the models time to finish downloading. Everything else in Margin works without it.

Where are Study Notes made? On your device, or with Apple's Private Cloud Compute. Only the transcript text is used, never the audio.

Importing

A YouTube link didn't work. Margin needs the video to have captions. If YouTube turns the request away, Margin shows YouTube's reason. A VPN often causes this; try again with the VPN off. You can also paste the transcript instead: on YouTube, open the video's description, tap Show transcript, then copy it and paste it into Margin.

Which podcast links work? Apple Podcasts episode and show links, podcast RSS feeds, and direct links to audio files (.mp3, .m4a, .aac, .wav). For a private feed, paste its private RSS address. Margin doesn't open Spotify, Vimeo or Facebook links.

How do I connect Pocket? Copy your API key from your Pocket account and paste it in Margin's Settings › Pocket. It's kept in your iPhone's Keychain. Disconnect deletes it.

iCloud

My sermons aren't on my other device. Margin syncs through your own private iCloud. Check that both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud turned on, and that your iCloud storage isn't full. To keep recordings off iCloud, turn off Settings › iCloud › Sync recordings to iCloud in Margin.

Your data

How do I delete a sermon? Open it and choose Delete Sermon. Its recording, transcript, notes and Study Notes are removed.

What does Margin collect? Margin itself collects nothing: there's no account and no Margin server. The App Store label lists what YouTube's player receives when you watch a sermon imported from YouTube. See the privacy policy.

What do tips do? They support Margin's development. They're optional and don't unlock anything. Apple handles the payment.
